Once, she could pluck fire out of the very air. Now she is the most insignificant member of an imperial court seething with intrigue.
Shay, firedancer and bride to the sun, faces punishment for the crimes of her dead father she has her magic bound and at the emperor's whim finds herself handed over as concubine to a barbarian lord. However, Lord Medyr of the Hawk doesn’t particularly fancy such a dubious gift – proving a surprise both to Shay and to the man who wants to use them as pawns in his ruthless bid for power.
The reserved, self-controlled firedancer is bewildered by the task of having to deal with that strange creature, a male. Yet with enemies threatening on all sides, Shay and the hot-headed warrior from the north must build a fragile bridge of trust. But will they realise in time that the growing attraction between them is also their deadliest danger?
A tale of elemental magic, perilous intrigues, a tortoise and pond slime.
Bride to the Sun eBook Lia Patterson
I first stumbled across Lia's work through fan fiction. She quickly became one of my favorite writers in the Tolkien fandom, and there wasn't one story of hers I didn't enjoy. When I discovered that she had published a novel, I was incredibly excited to see what she had created. And what a thing of beauty it is. "Bride of the Sun" follows the journey of Shay, a Sikhandi firedancer, as she unexpectedly finds her life intertwined with that of Medyr, a lord from the northern land of Aneiron. It is a story full of adventure, intrigue, romance, and fantasy, and I devoured it within the course of a night.
Lia has crafted an incredibly detailed world in her novel, drawing upon a myriad of Eastern influences, while throwing magic into the mix. The nice thing too is that she does not coddle readers with her world-building and there is much to be discovered as one progresses through the story. I'm sure there are also many new details that will take on new meaning with repeat readings, so this is certainly a novel to be read over again.
As a female reader of Asian descent, I was thrilled to find a protagonist that I could see myself in, physically. Beyond that, I appreciated that Shay was a strong but imperfect hero, who sometimes needed to be saved but could also hold her own in different ways as well.
I was very sad when the story came to an end, because I was so thoroughly enjoying our heroes' journey. I think there is much potential for a sequel should Lia choose to pursue it, especially in exploring the realm of Aneiron. If she does, I will be the first in line to purchase it!

Bride to the Sun eBook Lia Patterson Reviews
I have been a faithful follower of Lia’s fan fiction work on “Stories of Arda” for a number of years. Her work with Tolkien’s characters and world is brilliant. I have long waited and looked forward to the day she would publish an original work.
I was delighted to find that she had published a novel, and did not hesitated to purchase her work. "Bride of the Sun" is a story full of adventure, intrigue, romance, and fantasy, and I could not put it down… I read it in one day.
She is a talented and masterful storyteller and I will enjoy reading this book again and again as I do with her other work.
I have been waiting forever to get my email notification that this book was published and as soon as I did I purchased it immediately. 4 hours later I finished and I wish there were a hundred more chapters. I have always loved Eastern culture and I thought it clever and delightful to see Eastern traditions woven into this fantastic universe! I loved everything about this book! The characters and their motivations gripped me and I found myself cheering and loving and despising in each new situation Shay and Medyr found themselves.
Lia Patterson is a truly gifted author and one of my absolute favorites! I did not want this story to end and I highly recommend it!! I hope to see more tales in this universe because some of the minor characters were so wonderful and it would be awesome to learn more about Medyr's home! I am off to read this enchanting book again and suggest everyone else do the same!
This was such a fun read. The plot was well paced and entertaining, the villains suitably threatening, the hero both handsome and principled, and the heroine believably brave and independent. I enjoyed the world building the Chinese-inspired Imperial Court was fascinating (and the culture clash with outlook of the northern "barbarians" was interesting and believable), and the magical system underlying the plot felt sufficiently well put together to come across as a believable construction within the fictional world, rather than a mere plot device. The writing is good and the writer has a nice turn of phrase.
Ms Patteron just moved onto my favorite authors list. Bride to the Sun is one of the best books I've read all year. I'm completely in love with her characters, even when they're making me crazy. The richness of the emotions pulled me completely into their heads. The descriptions are so rich and vivid, I feel like i'm there. I can see it, feel it and smell every sceen. I listened to this on text to speech driving back and forth to work last week and suddenly a virtually intolerable drive was too short. Well done Ms Patterson, I'll be watching for more!
I have always enjoyed reading Lia's fan fiction works, and wanted to support a favorite author by buying her published novel. I didn't even know what it was about before I bought it, but was hooked right away! I read it in as much of one sitting as I could, staying up far into the night to finish it last night. (What a great use of my daylight savings time extra hour!)
The book treads a fine line between adult romance and young adult fantasy. There is nothing too graphic in the book, although sexual violence is threatened against some characters. Anything more hinted at happens off-screen. I would recommend this book for adults and older teens. This is definitely a "Try if You Like" the Damar books by Robin McKinley, the Tortall books by Tamora Pierce, or the Septimus Heap books by Angie Sage.
The only reasons I gave it four stars instead of five is that some parts were a little confusing to me. I thought the pacing of the reveal of how Fire Dancers and the Elements work was fine, but other aspects I am still puzzling out. I'm a little hazy on what the main characters look like apart from their hair color, but perhaps she was making that deliberately vague so that we could imagine them ourselves. My biggest problem is that I am having a really hard time picturing the geographical relationship of the various countries mentioned in the book relative to each other. If Ms. Patterson writes a sequel (and I hope she does!) I really hope it includes a map.
